Peridot is the birthstone for August and is a semi costly stone. Peridot Birthstone is sought after by discerning women who love the olive-green color (a guess why it is called Olivine). The color of a Peridot could be sparkling pale green, yellowish green, olive green or medium dark green. Sometimes these beautiful jewels can be mistaken for Emeralds.

Peridot is also the anniversary gemstone for the 16th year of marriage. It is not so expensive. So it can be within everyone's reach and could be used more than now.
These gemstones can be in any type of jewelry. Women all over the world desire to own Sterling Silver Peridot rings. Most of them also buy and Peridot Bracelets, Peridot earrings, and Peridot Necklaces. It is fast becoming beloved to make engagement rings with this gemstone.
However, supplies of stones larger than 3 carats have dwindled greatly. Years ago this beautiful gemstone used to come from Pakistan. But the mines there have got destroyed and they have not produced much in the modern past. Arizona does produce some stones. This means that, collectors will still benefit by purchasing this lovely Birthstone produced there.
If you are a assembler looking for Peridots, you should go to a local rock club or person listed as a member of the American Gem Trade Association. It is prominent to deal with reputable dealers. I have come across many customers who have bought gemstones from unscrupulous dealers. These unsuspecting victims based their decisions on the level talk of the salesman and the relative low prices of the gem stones offered to them.
When looking for Peridots, first make sure that it is a genuine, natural stone. Synthetic (Lab created) and imitation stones look beautiful and are cheap. But they have no real value. If you want a natural Peridot gemstone or Peridot jewelry, (which, of course, is more expensive) go to a reputable dealer. You may also ask for a certificate of authenticity.
How do you judge a good Pridot? You will want one with a good rich color. Pale colored gems do not have selected value. Look for clean, clear stones with only minor inclusions. If there be any inclusions, they should not be noticeable to the naked eye. Be wary of cracks, for these may later come to be worse and the stone may even break up.
You should remember that the hardness of Peridots is somewhere colse to 6.5 to 7. Hence they will begin to show scratches if not cared for. The other good green stone, the Emerald gemstone, which is harder, is much more expensive. Emeralds commonly have lots of inclusions.
Good luck to you as you look for Peridots. I am available to anything who needs guidance on the selection of this stone.
